Decoupage: how to achieve the marble effect

The tests to achieve an imitation marble finish or effect come from antiquity, from the artisans experts who provide us with techniques since several years before Christ. For centuries, this marble effect has been used to embellish doors or ceilings, as well as tables and other decorative objects.

This decoupage technique was considered as a recognition of the skill of those artisans who over time managed to develop an excellent faux marble technique that still exists to this day.

Marble is a very rewarding one and each craftsman has their own tricks and methods, using different materials. Next we are going to try to achieve a grain based on a plywood tablet, in order to prepare it for a work of decoupage.

Stretch the white acrylic paint and wait for it to dry completely. Above the white base, it must be spread with the brush so that it has a color diluted by the mixture of the three acrylic colors: black, green and ocher.

Quickly before the paint dries, apply gently with a rolled plastic bag to create a mottled background. This technique provides a random formation of the lighter areas, and darker areas.

Before the paint is dry, run the large, soft brush across the panel in a zigzag motion but without scratching to create shadow areas.

Let the surface dry well and with a fine brush, dipped in just a little white, follow a track that has already been formed, creating thin sales, which at some points will be more marked to achieve that the imitation of marble look as real as possible. Better yet, you can mimic some themes.

With the same brush dipped in water, just try to touch the grain you just drew. Thus, the water contained in the brush will fade and the color of a part, creating an even more effective marbled effect.

After drying is complete, the surface will be ready for decoupage and then image application. After the drowning and painting phase, working with a good rubbing the protective wax and polishing to give a very natural look.
