Train with recycled cardboard

Train with recycled cardboard

We have done a lovely train with recycled materials and a little imagination. With the shape of an egg carton we have made the wagons and with a cardboard tube the locomotive. With a little silver cardboard, rope and paint we have finished making the complete train, you will surely love trying to do it with children since painting the pieces with acrylic paint fascinates them.

The materials that I have used are:

  • A wide piece of egg carton, with 7 cavities
  • a cardboard tube
  • silver gold and red cardstock
  • a small piece of white card
  • blue and orange acrylic paint
  • rope of the color you want
  • hot and cold silicone
  • small flower shape die cutter
  • die cutter for making small holes
  • scissors
  • a brush
  • a compass

You can see this craft step by step in the following video:

First step:

We cut the shapes of the wagons and the chimney of the locomotive in the egg carton. To do this, we will cut together two cavities that will make the shape of a wagon, thus up to three wagons. And we cut a single cavity that will be the chimney.

Second step:

We paint all the pieces with acrylic paint. We paint the cardboard tube blue, two wagons blue and one orange. The fireplace is also painted blue.

Third step:

We are going to make the wheels of the train, for it We draw the circles on the red gold and silver cardboard with the help of a compass. We will make a total of two large red wheels, which will go on the back of the locomotive, 8 small red wheels and 8 small gold wheels. We will also make another circle of about 5 cm in diameter to make the upper part of the fireplace.

Fourth step:

We glue the wheels on the train cars and on the locomotive. We cut a square of about 5 x 5 cm sideways, we make a roll by gluing its ends, and stick it on the cardboard tube, which will make the fireplace.

Fifth step:

We take the circle that we have made to make the cone that will go on top of the fireplace. We cut one side of the circle to where the center point is where we have nailed the compass. In this way we turn the circle with our fingers to form the cone and glue its ends with the hot silicone. With the cone formed we place it on top of the chimney pipe.

Step Six:

With the flower die cutter we make 16 flowers to decorate the central part of the wheels. We glue the little flowers with the cold silicone.

Seventh step:

With the hole punch, we pierce the wagons to pass a rope and to be able to unite the whole structure. We knot the ropes and we will have our magnificent recycled train ready.
