Head with internal structure for children

Head with internal structure for children

Los cabezudos is a cultural tradition from the Levante area, Catalonia and the Valencian Community. But we can make a craft with the children to create big heads and make a parade or dress up.

This is a workshop that does cooperation. If you wish, you can start by drawing a few drawings, in order to decide what you want the tadpole to look like. Next, take clay and shape your idea by building a small scale model.

The next step is to take a cube, put it on a boy's head and mark the height of the eyes. With the help of a drill we will have to make two holes in the cube (being very careful not to break it) which will be the holes through which we will look. Next, on the cube, we will create a series of internal structures that we manufacture from rolled newspaper churros and adhesive packing tape.

Now we can start cover the entire structure. We can do it with paper mache, but it will be even better if we use plasterboard. Cardboard stone is a special paper mache, more spongy, manufactured industrially from paper, cardboard, plaster, blotting oil, ... You can buy it prepared in dry sheets. These sheets have a smooth texture on one side and rougher on the other. It is also called fallero cardboard, since it is the material used to make the dolls of the Valencian fallas.

Prepare a basin of water and a plate with thick wallpaper glue (for more details, see the instructions I give on the PREPARATION OF THE papier-mâché). You must moisten the cardboard-stone in water, then wet it with the glue and, as in the previous technique, cover the internal structure of the tadpole until it gives it the desired shape. Going by the sketch that you had made of clay.

Make sure both eye holes are uncovered!

Finally, you just have to let the stubble dry until it is hard (5 or 6 days) and paint it.

Complement by adding a good costume.
